Kickoff Reception 2006

Beautillion 2006 officially began with a KickOff Reception at the African American
Art Culture Complex - Beaux workshops on leadership and exploring what it means
to be 'A Man Of Character' were held amidst Original works of art by JoeSam
entitled "Portraits of Us."
AAAC Sargent Johnson Gallery
"The content of JoeSam's work is often social and political commentary.
His style is characterized by the juxtaposition of diverse, independent, often
quite simple elements and his use of bright colors, reflective of his African
American heritage."

Workshops: Jamie Williams delivered a presentation on Leadership and Robert
Shoffner presented 'A Man of Character" during an interactive session discussing
the values, attributes, and behaviors inherent in developing into 'A Man of Character'.

Beaux were asked to consider what traits and values define 'A Man of Character':
•
What does it mean to be a man of character?
•
What is your responsibility to your community?
•
What does it take to be a leader in your community?

Past Beau Christien Tompkins (2004) shares his experience and memories with the
2006 Beaux. Through his involvement in Beautillion he tells the beaux what he
felt to be his personal benefit. "As a young African American male in the
Bay Area attending an independent school can be an intensely solitary and personal
process. As a beau, I was able to develop a strong sense of community and comraderie,
forging relationships with the other beaux, especially through the rites-of-passage
and civil rights curriculum. I began to understand that 'I am not alone'." Christien
is currently a Political Science and African American Studies major at Columbia
University-NYC.

Beau Steven Buford takes notes as presenter Jamie Williams speaks on Leadership
skills.
